Probably the most famous Army order issued during the whole of the War, this historic document needs introduction to none. The circumstances of its issuing are as well known as the splendid way in which its exhortations were obeyed, and more than obeyed. But it must be admitted that, as a message designed to hearten those in an anything but heartening situation, the celebrated "backs-to-the-wall" order was about as cold comfort as G.H.Q. could have devised.
