2nd Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment
Lost in the Ypres Salient on the
2nd May 1915.
He is commemorated on panel 12
of the magnificent ‘Menin Gate Memorial’ in Ypres Belgium.
The soldiers used to call the
town Wipers, but will be found as ‘Leper’ on today’s maps.
Menin Gate is a huge arched
memorial spanning the start of the road to Menin. Designed by Sir Reginald
Bloomfield R.A. it stands as a memorial to the 56,000 British Troops who fell in
the Ypres Salient prior to August 16th 1917 but have no known graves.
Field Marshall Lord Plummer unveiled it in 1927.
Every
evening at 8pm traffic is stopped and the local Fire Brigade perform a moving
ceremony in honour of those who died. It is usually attended by hundreds of
visitors.
